# What is BOT Chain

> BOT Chain is an EVM-compatible layer 1. Learn what carries over from Ethereum and what works differently.

BOT Chain is an EVM-compatible layer 1 blockchain, so you can build on it with Solidity and the Ethereum tools you already know. This page explains what carries over from Ethereum and what doesn't.

## Why it matters

Most of what you learn from Ethereum tutorials works on BOT Chain without changes. Knowing the few differences up front saves you from the errors that catch most newcomers.

## How it works

BOT Chain nodes run a client based on Geth, the Go Ethereum client. Validators take turns producing blocks using Parlia, a consensus engine that comes from BNB Smart Chain. Blocks arrive about every 0.75 seconds. See [Consensus and finality](/get-started/bot-chain/consensus-and-finality).

The native token is **BOT**. It pays for gas, just like ETH on Ethereum. On testnet the token is **tBOT**, which you get free from the [faucet](https://faucet.botchain.ai/basic) and which has no value.

BOT Chain also runs its own apps that you can build on:

* **BDEX**, a decentralized exchange with V2 and V3 pools (forks of Uniswap V2 and V3). See [BOT Chain's DEX docs](https://dev-docs.botchain.ai/docs/DEX).
* **Bridge**, which moves USDT between BOT Chain and Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain and Tron. See [BOT Chain's bridge docs](https://dev-docs.botchain.ai/docs/Bridge).
* **BOTScan**, a block explorer built on Blockscout, at [scan.botchain.ai](https://scan.botchain.ai) and [scan.bohr.life](https://scan.bohr.life) for testnet.

For the project's own description, roadmap and validator details, see [BOT Chain's documentation](https://dev-docs.botchain.ai/docs/intro).

## What carries over from Ethereum

| Area | Works the same |
| - | - |
| Smart contracts | Solidity contracts compile and deploy as usual. Target the Cancun EVM. |
| Accounts | Same address format, same keys. Your MetaMask address works on BOT Chain. |
| Tools | Foundry, Hardhat, Remix, viem, ethers.js, web3.js and wagmi all work. |
| JSON-RPC | The standard `eth_` methods work. See [JSON-RPC](/reference/json-rpc/overview). |
| Token standards | ERC-20, ERC-721 and ERC-1155 work unchanged. |
| Transactions | Legacy, EIP-1559 (type 2), blob (type 3) and EIP-7702 (type 4) transactions are supported. See [Supported EIPs](/get-started/bot-chain/supported-eips). |

## What's different

| Area | On BOT Chain |
| - | - |
| Chain IDs | `677` for mainnet and `968` for testnet. |
| Gas token | BOT, not ETH. |
| Block time | About 0.75 seconds, compared with 12 seconds on Ethereum. |
| Fees | The base fee is zero, so you pay only the gas price. See [Gas and fees](/get-started/bot-chain/gas-and-fees). |
| Latest EVM version | Cancun. Contracts compiled for Osaka can fail. |
| USDT | Has **6 decimals** on BOT Chain. See [Contract addresses](/reference/contract-addresses). |
| Library support | BOT Chain is not in viem's built-in chain list. You define it yourself. |
| Event queries | BOT Chain's docs say `eth_getLogs` is disabled on the public RPC, and there's no public WebSocket. See [Known limitations](/get-started/bot-chain/known-limitations). |
